The English Breakfast

Hi there,

Welcome back to The English Breakfast — the newsletter for Italian professionals who want to feel more confident in English at work.

Ready for your weekly 5-minute English workout? Grab a coffee and let’s get started

A little something just for you, English Breakfasters…

I was in Manchester last weekend catching up with family and friends, and it reminded me of something:

There are lots of phrases I only hear when I’m in the UK — and for English learners, they can be difficult to understand if you’re not expecting them.

Watch the video to hear 4 of my favourite ones.

The question is: would you understand them in a real conversation?

5 essential phrasal verbs with “get”

Phrasal verbs are a nightmare for many English learners — so each week, we focus on 5 you really need to know.

Try this week’s quiz to see how many you recognise.

I’m looking for a new book to read at the moment (suggestions welcome!), so I’ve downloaded a sample of Captivate by Vanessa Van Edwards.

The book challenges a common idea: we often think social skills like charisma and charm are traits you’re born with, but she argues they’re actually skills you can learn.

Interestingly, when people are forced to choose, they tend to prioritise warmth (kindness, trustworthiness, social skills) over competence (ability, intelligence, capability). So, could this be a simple way to give your career a boost?

🎧 For this week’s listening challenge, hear the author share some practical tips on how to be more captivating when you speak.

As always, let me know what you think — I love hearing your feedback.

P.S. I’m not affiliated with the book or the author… so if you’d rather learn 99 essential phrases for understanding native speakers, you might enjoy my book instead 😉 Check it out here.

All right, that’s it for this week’s edition.

Have a great week and I’ll see you next time. I suppose I’ll have to do something Easter-themed for next Sunday!

All the best,

Dan
