Today we’re focusing on how to describe quantities and amounts in English. For example, how would you say la maggior parte or nella media in English?

Quantities ⚖
How do you say una quantità importante in English? Take a look at these useful phrases that help you to describe quantities. How many did you already know?
Phrase | Meaning | Common mistake / When to use |

The vast majority (of) | Almost all of a group; a very large percentage. | ❌ The major part (Literal translation of la maggior parte) |
A great deal of | A large quantity of something (used with uncountable nouns like time, money, or effort). | Use this phrase instead of A lot of / Much in more formal settings |
On average | The typical or normal amount, calculated by adding quantities and dividing by the total. | ❌ In the medium (Literal translation of in media) |

That’s Laura. She works for a company based in London, and she’s got a very interesting idea for increasing efficiency in the office.
Read her presentation to the board of directors below and try to imagine which of the phrases we saw in the table above would make sense in the gaps.
