The English Breakfast - Business English tips

The English Breakfast ☕️

Hello again and welcome back to The English Breakfast. Your weekly collection of business English tips and tricks to make you look awesome in the office next week.

Something for beginners

Something intermediate

If you ask people what they enjoy most in life, there’s a good chance that travelling will be high on the list.

And I’m no exception - in fact we had a little trip to Transylvania a couple of weeks ago, driving around the countryside looking for castles and vampires (see below for mandatory photo of Dracula’s castle and appropriate pose).

Dracula’s Castle in Romania. Terrifying, I know…

Apart from exploring new places and having new experiences, the thing I love most about a trip is coming back home with a fresh perspective and that wonderful feeling of being mentally recharged.

But not everyone is always so happy with what they find when they reach their destination, so much so that one particularly popular European city even has a clinically recognised syndrome attached to the feeling of disappointment travellers feel after it fails to deliver their dream travel experience.

I’m talking about Paris syndrome. Ever heard of it? Neither had I, until I found this article from The Independent.

Check out the article to learn more and try to answer the following questions:

  • What is Paris syndrome?

  • What left tourists feeling underwhelmed (=disappointed) or even deeply shocked?

  • What symptoms are associated with Paris syndrome?

Something advanced

As you advance along your English learning journey, whatever your goal might be, a common thing I hear among English learners is the desire to speak with an authentic native accent.

Should you try to lose your accent when speaking a foreign language? And what about pronunciation? Is there a difference between accent and pronunciation?

Here’s what I tell my students…

Watch the video below in Italian or read it here in English.

What do you think? Have you ever considered the distinction between pronunciation and accent. Reply to this email and let me know?

All right, that’s it. Have a great week and I’ll see you next time.

Ciao for now,
