Two words everyone hates, fines for tourists, and 3 common mistakes
Migliora il tuo inglese oggi - Business English For Italian Professionals
Hi there,
I hope you’ve had a great week.
Welcome back to The English Breakfast—the newsletter for Italian professionals who want to feel more confident using English at work.
Today’s edition is packed! We’ll start with two everyday words you might be pronouncing wrong, then look at three common mistakes to avoid. And since I’ve just come back from a relaxing week exploring Umbria (and yes, the holiday blues are real!), we’ll stay on the theme of travel — including why some European destinations are now handing out surprising fines to badly behaved tourists.
Grab a cup of whatever you like and let’s go! ☕️
Can you pronounce these two words correctly?
We’re starting off with a little bit of pronunciation practice today. We’re only going to look at two words, but they cause trouble for nearly everyone who’s learning English (even at higher levels!)

Tourists behaving badly
Europe’s most popular holiday spots are getting tougher on badly behaved visitors. From flip-flops behind the wheel to swimming in Venice’s canals, tourists can now face large fines (=multe) for breaking the rules.
🏆️ While you’re reading, try to understand whether these five statements are True or False. There’s a quiz further down for you to check your answers.
In Turkey, passengers who unbuckle their seatbelt before the plane has stopped taxiing can be fined €62.
In Albufeira, Portugal, wearing swimwear away from the beach can result in a fine of up to €1,500.
In Spain’s Balearic Islands, public drinking fines are capped at €300.
Collecting a seashell on a Greek beach could cost you €1,000.
Swimming in Venice’s canals is permitted as long as it’s not near gondolas.
