The English Workout đŸ’Ș

Ciao a tutti!

Daniel Tanner here and welcome back to ChatBubble the weekly newsletter that helps Italian professionals communicate more effectively with their English speaking colleagues and clients. đŸ’Œ

Let’s get started
.

Today, we’re looking at 10 examples of new slang that I’ve noticed have come into use over the last 5 years. As Generation Z (A.K.A. the TikTok generation, A.K.A the group of people who were born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s) enter the workplace, you’ll want to keep up to date with the phrases they’re using so you don’t look like too much of a boomer at the water cooler. 😉

Check out this conversation between Sarah and Alex. Can you spot the 7 examples of new “Gen Z” slang?

Sarah: Hey fam, did you hear about the party at Jake's place tonight?

Alex: Yeah, I heard it's gonna be lit! Are you going?

Sarah: Nah, I'm feeling kinda salty because Jake didn't invite me.

Alex: Don't worry about it, he's probably just capping. You know how he is.

Sarah: True, but still... I'm not in the mood to flex in front of everyone tonight anyway.

Alex: Fair enough. Let's just chill and watch a movie instead. By the way, did you see Emma's glow up? She looks amazing now!

Sarah: Yeah, she's definitely had a major glow up since last year. Anyway, spill the tea, what's been going on with you lately?

What does those words mean?

Did you spot the new slang in bold? Let’s have a look at what they mean.

Flex: To show off or boast about something, often related to one's possessions, achievements, or skills. Example: "Check out my new car, I'm gonna flex on Instagram."

Lit: Used to describe something exciting, excellent, or impressive. Example: "That party last night was so lit!"

Salty: Feeling bitter or resentful, often in response to a disappointment or perceived injustice. Example: "Why are you so salty about not getting invited to the concert?"

Ghost: To suddenly disappear or stop communicating with someone, especially in the context of dating or relationships. Example: "I thought we had a great conversation, but then he ghosted me."

Fam: A term of endearment used to refer to one's close friends or family members. Example: "Hey fam, what's the plan for tonight?"

Simp: Someone who goes above and beyond to impress someone they're attracted to, often at the expense of their own dignity or self-respect. Example: "He's always buying her gifts and doing favors for her, he's such a simp."

Yeet: To throw something with force, often in a celebratory manner. It can also be used as an exclamation of excitement or triumph. Example: "I'm gonna yeet this ball across the field!"

Glow up: To undergo a significant positive transformation in appearance or personality. Example: "Have you seen Sarah lately? She's had a major glow up since high school."

Cap: To lie or exaggerate. Derived from the slang term "capping" meaning lying. Example: "Are you serious, or are you just capping right now?"

Tea: Gossip or insider information. Example: "Spill the tea! What's the latest drama at school?"
