How many words do you need to know to speak English fluently?
According to this article from the BBC you need to know around 3000 words to understand the dialogue in TV and film. So, how can we learn all those words?
Today I’m going to give you 10 ways to help you learn new words so they’ll (hopefully!) stay in your memory.
Use Flashcards: Make simple cards with English words on one side and your native language or a picture on the other side. Flashcards can make remembering words easier.

Mnemonics Can Help: Mnemonics are memory tricks. Try making associations or short tricks to connect new words to words you already know.
Learn Words in Sentences: It's better to learn new words in sentences or phrases rather than just by themselves. This way, you understand how to use them in real situations.
Use Technology: There are many apps and websites to help you learn English. They often have games and exercises to make learning fun.

Keep a Vocabulary Notebook: Use a special notebook for new words. Write down the English word, what it means, and a sentence with it. Review your notebook regularly. When a word becomes so familiar that it’s obvious to you what it means, cross it off your list.
Talk in English: Try speaking English with others as much as you can. Talking to people who speak English or other ESL students can help you remember words.
Set Goals: Decide to learn a few new words each day. 5 or 6. Don't try to learn too many at once. Gradually increase your goal as you get better.
Read a Lot: Reading English books, newspapers, or magazines exposes you to many words. You’ll definitely find new words, but it’s also a great way to revise vocabulary because you see words you already know in action!
The BBC news app is a great place to start for interesting articles.
Watch English Movies or Shows: Watching movies or shows in English can help you with pronunciation and understanding how words are used.

Test Yourself: Make your own quizzes or find online quizzes to check what you remember. This can help you remember words better.
Remember, it takes time to remember new words, so be patient. Keep practicing and using these strategies, and your English will improve! 🚀
