Spero che tu abbia passato una bella settimana! Qui in Italia è stata più corta del solito, visto che lunedì scorso era un giorno festivo, come diciamo nel Regno Unito: una bank holiday.

Comunque, sono sicuro che non vedi l’ora di iniziare con questa nuova edizione di The English Breakfast—la newsletter settimanale piena di consigli e trucchetti per i professionisti italiani che usano l’inglese al lavoro.

Ti è mai capitato che qualcuno ti fermasse per strada con questa domanda?

“Excuse me. Have you got the time?” ⏰
(Scusi, potrebbe dirmi che ore sono?)

Se questa domanda ti mette in crisi, non sei l’unico. Dire l’ora è una delle prime cose che impariamo in inglese, ma quando ci colgono di sorpresa, frasi come quarter to e half past possono far inciampare anche chi ha un buon livello.

Ecco, quindi un modo semplice per dire l’ora usando solo due numeri.

Let’s do a recap of the lesson in English 🇬🇧 💪 

The easiest way to say the time? Just read the two numbers you see on a digital watch.

For example:

• 2:40 → two forty

• 6:10 → six ten

🕐 Watch out for afternoon and evening times!
In spoken English, we don’t go higher than 12 for the hour. So instead of saying:

• 13:30 ❌ thirteen thirty

You should say:

• 13:30 ✅ one thirty

Here are some more examples:

• 16:15 → four fifteen

• 19:40 → seven forty

Of course, you might also hear people say things like:

• quarter past four instead of four fifteen

• twenty to eight instead of seven forty

But don’t worry! You can choose to use only the digital style when you speak.

💡 Personally, I think it sounds more modern, it’s easier to say, and much clearer to understand—so if you like this tip, feel free to stick with digital time!
