If you make a mistake in English, don't say this...

Business English for Italian Professionals

The English Breakfast ☕️

Hi there,

Eccoci qua con la nuova edizione di The English Breakfast—la rubrica settimanale di consigli e trucchi di Business English pensata appositamente per i professionisti italiani.

Grab a cup of coffee and let’s go! 😎 ☕️

A little piece of advice

I want to start today’s edition with a little piece of advice I often give my students — in fact, it’s become a rule I use in my own classes.

Here it is:

If English isn’t your first language, of course you’ll make mistakes from time to time. And when someone corrects you, the instinctive reaction is often to say “sorry.”

I get it. This happens to me almost daily when I’m speaking Italian. But instead of saying “sorry,” my advice is to say “thank you.”

It’s a small shift — and it might even sound a bit strange — but for me, it changes everything.

Nobody enjoys making mistakes, but if you want to speak a language fluently, they’re both unavoidable and essential.

When you say “thank you” instead of “sorry,” you reframe the mistake. It’s no longer something bad you shouldn’t have done — it becomes a valuable step forward in your learning journey.

Try it next time you’re speaking. See if it changes the way you feel, too.

Here’s me trying to explain this concept in Italian…feel free to correct my mistakes 😆

Habemus Papam

If you’re reading this from the western hemisphere and don’t live under a rock, you’ve probably heard that there’s a new pope in town.

Regardless of your papal proclivities and liturgical leanings, I thought this would be the perfect moment for you to put your ecclesiastic English knowledge to the test!

Try the quiz below and see how many you can get right. (Full disclosure: I got 5/10 so I’m sure you can do better than me 😅)

I want more!

OK, I get it, you love learning English and can think of nothing you’d rather be doing on a Sunday morning.

Well, here’s a quick quiz to test your knowledge of a few business-related phrasal verbs you’re likely to come across ( 👈️ that’s one of them) in the office.

Let’s go!
