Migliora il tuo inglese oggi - Business English For Italian Professionals
Hi there,
Welcome back to The English Breakfast — the newsletter for Italian professionals who want to sound more confident and natural in English at work.
I’ve had quite an eye-opening experience this week.
To keep it short: I have an Italian language exam on the 4th of December and I’ve started attending a group course to prepare for it.
So far, it’s been great — and very refreshing to be on the other side of the classroom! It reminds me what it feels like to be a student again: speaking in front of people you don’t know, making mistakes, and feeling a bit “under the spotlight.” It’s a good way for me to put myself in my students’ shoes (=mettermi nei panni dei miei studenti).
Wish me luck! I’ll tell you how it goes 😆
Speaking of making mistakes…here’s a really common one that English learners make at all levels.
Watch this week’s video to discover what the mistake is — and how to avoid it.

But that’s not the end of the story. Here’s a quick rundown of how to use these verbs correctly.
These verbs can be followed by a noun, an -ing form, or a “that” clause, but be careful because each verb allows slightly different combinations. This is why some sentences Italian speakers often use—like “Can you confirm me the date?”—sound incorrect in English. Take a look at these examples.
SUGGEST
✔ I suggest a different time.
✔ I suggest starting earlier.
✔ I suggest (that) we meet tomorrow.
✘ I suggest to start earlier.
✘ I suggest you to arrive on time.
RECOMMEND
✔ I recommend this restaurant.
✔ I recommend booking in advance.
✔ I recommend (that) you try the tasting menu.
✔ I recommend this place to you.
✘ I recommend you to try it.
✘ I recommend me this book.
CONFIRM
✔ Can you confirm the date?
✔ Can you confirm that the meeting is at 10?
✔ Please confirm your attendance.
✔ Can you confirm the date for me?
✘ Can you confirm me the date?
✘ Can you confirm to come?
Time for a challenge 🏆️
Test your understanding. Do the quiz and see if you can get all 6 questions correct. Let’s go!
Let’s be honest
If you want to be fluent in a language, you need real chances to speak.
If you live in an English-speaking country or have English-speaking friends, you get lots of opportunities to practise.
But if you live in Ponte Cagnano in the province of Salerno…maybe not so many!
So, because I’m an incredibly generous person and I want you to improve your English, I’m offering all my English Breakfast subscribers the opportunity to have two free conversion sessions in The English Fluency Club.
It’s a a friendly, weekly group session led by me, where you can build confidence and learn to talk about any topic naturally.
That’s it. No sign-up forms.
Just join the group and start practising your English.
I currently have two spaces available for the Monday session from 18:15-19:00 Italian time.
If you’d like to join, contact me here with your name, email, and the message “English Fluency Club” and I’ll send you the link.
All right, that’s it for today’s edition. What did you think? Reply to this email and let me know 📧
😀 It was great!
🙂 It was OK.
❌ There was nothing useful for me.
Have a great week and see you next time.
Dan
