English made simple

Hi English learners! 👋

Welcome back to English made simple by ChatBubble. Your weekly English practice.

If you’re learning English, or even already speak fluently, you’ve probably heard of irregular verbs. They can be a menace (=something dangerous) for speakers of all English levels…and I’ll tell you a little secret…sometimes even native speakers make mistakes with irregular verbs! 😅

What’s the difference between a regular verb and an irregular verb? Let’s have a quick look.

Regular verbs

Good news! These are easy. Just add -ed to the infinite to make the past simple form.

  • I play the guitar every day ➡️ I played in a rock band years ago

  • She calls her mum once a day to chat ➡️ I called my friend yesterday

Irregular verbs

Bad news! 😅 There is no rule for creating the past forms of these verbs, they’re all different. Here are just a few examples.

  • I think I know this verb! ➡️ I thought I knew this verb

  • His job pays really well ➡️ His last job paid really badly

The best way to learn these verbs is to use them, and then make a list of the ones you don’t know.

Try this fun quiz and see how many you can answer correctly!

Extra information:

You’ll learn three forms of each verb. The infinite, the past simple, and the past participle, for example, do, did, and done. (It’s super boring, I know, but it’s also super important!)

You’ll need the past participle for sentences like, “I’ve just done the best quiz ever”, but we’ll look at these in another lesson.
