English in your inbox - Make vs Do

🧐 Do you REALLY know the difference?

Hi English learners! 👋

Welcome to another edition of the ChatBubble newsletter. A weekly collection of activities and games to take your English to the next level!

 📊 This lesson is for elementary (A2) and intermediate (B1) learners.

Today we’re talking about just two words.

Make and Do

Lots of people confuse these two words in English, but not you. At least not after you do the quiz and activities below, which you’ll definitely do because……

Ready? Let’s go!

Do vs Make 🥊

These two words can cause a lot of confusion for a poor English student like yourself, but don’t worry, I’ve made a video for you to show you the difference. Watch it below ⬇️

So, now we know the rules:

 Do = to complete a task ✍️

Make = create something 🎂

Unfortunately, there are lots of phrases that don’t follow these rules. These are called exceptions. (I know…English is annoying). Here are some very common exceptions with make that you need to know.

Exceptions with Make

  • Make money (earn money)

  • Make a complaint

  • Make a mess

  • Make love (have sex)

  • Make friends

  • Make a phone call

  • Make progress

Easy, right? Test your understanding with the quiz below 😎

Quiz time! 🎲

 📊 Elementary (A2+) 🔠 Vocabulary ⏱️4 mins

OK, let’s see if you REALLY know the difference between make and do. Can you get all 12 questions in the quiz correct?

Hello…can you hear me?

📊 Intermediate (A2) 📖 Reading ⏱️ 10-15 mins

These days, we all use our phones for pretty much everything. Texts, online shopping, watching endless hours of emotional videos of dogs being reunited with their owners (just me? 😯) but once upon a time, not so long ago, the humble mobile phone did only one thing, and that was make phone calls.

50 years ago to be precise, the very first mobile phone call was made by this guy. ⬇️ (After all these years, someone should really tell him that’s not how you hold a mobile phone… 😬)

Complete the three sentences below using do and make, in the correct form, and then find the sentences in the BBC article to check your answers! How cool! 🤩

  1. "Basically, it was just dial the number and ………. the call," Mr Wood explains.

  2. When you want to ………. these wonderful things that it can ………., you have to get an app

  3. "The cell phone is not going to ………. it by itself," he admits. "But it will be the central part of this great future."

Congratulations! You’re really making a difference. Remember that making mistakes is an important part of learning English, and the most important thing is that you do your best. Anyway, that’s all for today, I have to go and make a phone call.

Send me a 👍️ if you enjoyed this ChatBubble, and I’ll see you next week.
