Don't forget your passport! ✈️

Migliora il tuo inglese oggi - Business English For Italian Professionals

The English Breakfast ☕️

Hi there,

I hope you had a great week!

I’m back in Manchester at the moment, spending time with family and friends. But tonight… we’re going to the OASIS reunion gig! I still can’t believe we managed to get tickets 🎸

Anyway—let’s jump into this week’s edition of The English Breakfast—your weekly newsletter full of tips and tricks for Italian professionals who use English at work.

So, grab yourself a frappuccino and let’s go…

✈️ Oh no! My passport!

If you’re like me, you probably check your passport every two minutes before a flight. No? Just me?

Well, summer’s here and lots of us are getting ready for a much-needed break. So this week, we’re looking at some super useful phrasal verbs you’ll hear or need when travelling for business or pleasure.

Phrasal verbs = verb + preposition (like check in, pick up, look around) that often mean something different from the individual words. And they’re everywhere in spoken English.

Let’s start with a little story…

🎧 What are the missing phrasal verbs?

Read the conversation between a tourist and a taxi driver. Can you guess the missing words? Then listen to the audio and check your answers.

Taxi driver: Morning! Where to?

Passenger: The airport please. I’m just heading home, sadly. Can’t believe the trip’s over. I checked (1)…… of the hotel about 30 minutes ago.

Taxi driver: Ah, end of the adventure. What time does your flight take (2)……?

Passenger: 11:15. So we should be fine…

Wait… no, no, no. My passport! I think I left it in a drawer at the hotel. I put it there after I  checked (3)…… and completely forgot about it.

Taxi driver: You’re kidding! I’ll turn around and just wait outside to pick you (4)…… again.

Passenger: Yes, please! Oh my God, I can’t believe this is happening.

Taxi driver: No worries, we’ll be quick. Good thing we set (5)…… early, huh?

Passenger: Seriously. If we’d left any later, I’d be in big trouble. Can you drop me (6)…… at Terminal 2 after this?

Taxi driver: Of course?

Passenger: Hopefully I’ll still have time to look (7)…… the duty-free before heading to the gate.

Taxi driver: Sounds like a plan. You’ve earned it! Next time though, maybe double-check the drawers before you leave, hey?

Passenger: Lesson learned!

In the meantime, here’s a great article from the BBC with tips on how to experience Italy like a local (not just a tourist!).
