Migliora il tuo inglese oggi - Business English For Italian Professionals
Hi there,
How’s your week going?
I’ve just wrapped up (= finito) several courses, so things are starting to wind down (=rilassarsi/spegnersi fig.) as we head into the summer break. That also means I finally have a bit more time to focus on some other projects—and I’ve got something exciting coming soon!
If you’ve ever wanted to understand native speakers better, you’ll definitely want to keep an eye out (= tenere gli occhi aperti). Watch this space! 😉
Anyway, let’s get started with this week’s edition of The English Breakfast—the weekly newsletter full of tips and tricks for Italian professionals who use English at work.
Grab yourself a coffee and let’s go…
“I’m having a meeting tomorrow”
Why do we use I’m having in that sentence and not will? Don’t we use I’m having for things happening in the present?
Watch the video below to unravel the mystery of this fundamental structure in English!
@danieltannerenglish Come usare il Present Continuous per il futuro - #ingleseperitaliani #learnenglish #imparareinglese #englishtips #fluentenglish #businessenglish
Let’s review what we saw in the video.
✅ I’m having is an example of the Present Continuous.
Structure:
Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
We use it in two main ways:
1. For things happening right now
This is the most common use—and probably the first one you learned.
Examples:
☝️ I’m writing this newsletter right now.
☝️ You’re (hopefully!) learning English.
2. For future plans and arrangements
We also use the Present Continuous to talk about the future, especially when there’s a plan or a fixed arrangement.
(Think: you’ve booked something, agreed on a time, or someone else is involved.)
Examples:
📅 I’m starting a new job on Monday.
📅 I’m visiting Umbria this summer.
📅 We’re meeting at 8pm tonight.
Now it’s your turn!
👉 What are you doing this summer? Got any plans?
