Migliora il tuo inglese oggi - Business English For Italian Professionals

The English Breakfast ☕️

Hi there,

How’s your week been?

We managed to escape the city heat last weekend and headed to the coast for a couple of days

I actually hadn’t been to the beach since 2023 so it was great to have a dip in the sea again!

Of course, Margot, our dog, came was with us too, and even though she isn’t really a fan of hot weather, she still had a great time exploring the pine forest near where we stayed, as you can see in the photo!

Anyway, let’s get started with this week’s edition of The English Breakfast—the weekly newsletter full of tips and tricks for Italian professionals who use English at work.

Grab yourself a coffee and let’s go…

How do you say dolce and salato in English?

Do you know the answer? Watch the video below and avoid making a common mistake!

Let’s recap what we saw in the video.

  • Sweet describes food that contains sugar – things you might eat for dessert.
Think: cake, biscuits, chocolate, yoghurt… (Getting hungry yet? 😆)

  • Savoury is the opposite of sweet.
It includes foods like bread, sandwiches, pizza, pasta – the main course stuff.

⚠️ Be careful with “salty”!
Salty means troppo salato – when there’s too much salt in the food. It’s usually not a compliment!

“This pizza is too salty!”

💡 And just a quick reminder:
Salad simply means insalata in English – it has nothing to do with salato! 😉

Now, what’s your favourite snack food? Do you prefer sweet or savoury snacks?

Ketchup or mayo? Let the sauce battle begin!

If you're a fan of fries (or chips, as we say in the UK), you probably have strong opinions about what belongs on them.

It usually comes down to two camps: Team Ketchup or Team Mayo.
(Or as I like to call it… the correct choice vs complete sacrilege 😄)

But have you ever wondered where ketchup actually came from?
It’s got a surprising backstory.
